Maash Dal Recipe

Ingredients:

  • One cup split urad dal(maash dal),

  • Four cups water,

  • One finely chopped onion,

  • One finely chopped tomato,

  • Four tbsps oil,

  • One tbsp fresh ginger paste,

  • Four-five finely chopped garlic & cloves each,

  • Half tbsp turmeric powder,

  • One tbsp chilli powder,

  • One tbsp coriander powder,

  • One tbsp garam masala,

  • Two tbsps fresh chopped coriander leaves,

  • Two-four chopped green chillies and

  • Salt to taste
  • How To Make Maash Dal:

  • Washing dal clean in water,leave to soak for about an hour.Then draining the dal,keep aside.

  • Now heating oil in a pan,add green chilies ,chopped onion,ginger and garlic.Stirring frequently,fry the mixture for a few minutes until it turns to a pale golden color.Sprinkle some water to prevent the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

  • Adding chilli powder,turmeric,garam masala,coriander powder and salt,fry the mixture for about five minutes to a golden color.

  • Now adding chopped tomatoes, still stirring frequently,fry the onion mixture for about five-ten minutes until the tomatoes are reduced to a paste.Add a little water,if necessary,to prevent the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan.Keep frying until the oil begins to separate.

  • Finally add the drained dal and water.Mixing well, reduce the flame,cover and allow to cook for about 20 minutes(until dal is cooked) and it turns in to a thick gravy.

  • Garnish with coriander leaves.

  • Serve hot with roti,naan or rice.
